Elegant and powerful, it is used for combat as well as more utilitarian purposes such as the ability to cut through most materials and for general illumination. As part of their journey from Padwan to Jedi, trainees ("younglings") undertake a rite of passage to gather a kyber crystal specifically attuned to them to form the energy core of their lightsaber. They then forge the physical weapon from various pieces and then appropriately calibrate it to their specific crystal. With such time, energy, and effort, the lightsaber literally becomes an extension of a Jedi's body and soul, helping connect them to the Force.
