Introduction to Jedi Law

The Jedi--the guardians of peace and justice in the Galaxy.  Legendary protectors who are guided and often powered by the Force and able to wield lightsabers with uncanny skill and accuracy.  Over hundreds of years, the Jedi have been a powerful ally to the Republic--Old and New.  Because of their mission, purpose, and history,  it is both logical and easy to simply rely on the nature of the Jedi Order to do the right thing at all times.  However, no person or organization is infallible, and because of the significant power that Force users hold, it is critical to ensure that the Jedi Order are held accountable to the Republic, and the Galaxy as a whole.  While the Jedi Council is the governing body tasked with doing so, it is also important to have external avenues for legal redress for both Jedi as well as the general citizenry.

With that, the law governing the Jedi Order encompasses a wide range of legal areas. These include:

- Jedi negligence: What to do when someone is the victim of a reckless Force user, resulting in a loss of limb, horn, beak, tentacle, claw, or any other appendage.

- Jedi Duty of Care: Should Jedi be held to a higher standard of care due to their Force-enhanced abilities?

- Jedi malfeasance: When Jedi are liable for intentionally and improperly using their Force powers, e.g., Jedi Mind Tricks or cheating in games of chance.

- Jedi administrative and procedural law: How to properly file and address claims before the Jedi Council and the galactic courts.

- Jedi Code interpretation and litigation: How can Jedi protect themselves against disciplinary actions by the Council.

- The Law of War: When Jedi are commissioned as Generals, are potential war crimes punishable by Republic Court-Martial or Jedi Council adjudication?

This is just a brief synopsis of the complex tension between the Force and the law and how to maintain a proper balance of both to allow the Jedi to carry out their stated purpose while ensuring broader protection of civilians.  Please reach out with questions and continue to follow for deeper discussions of this important area of the law.

May the Law be With You!
